Opening Nov 16th Wandering: Solo Show from Charmaine Olivia
Ultra High Frequency Gallery proudly presents “Wandering”, a solo exhibition by artist Charmaine Olivia. This immersive installation showcases a collection of 500 original works on paper created during Charmaine’s travels across Mexico, Argentina, France, England, Washington, Oregon and California.
“Wandering” invites viewers to travel alongside the artist, sharing fleeting moments, emotions and impressions from her journey, offering a collection that reflect both the outer world and her inner landscape. From the colorful villages in the Yucatan state of Mexico, to the Argentinian countryside and the wildflowers in the South of France, Charmaine finds different inspirations in different places.
Art is her way of exploring worlds - both real and imagined - especially when dealing with feelings of shyness and anxiety. She uses art as a way to navigate through life, using the female form to embody characters from mythology, dreams and even video games. For Charmaine, making art is a form of therapy, sometimes when faced with overwhelming anxiety, drawing is a way for her to focus on something other than letting her thoughts spiral. Often, after several drawings, she will feel better.
Charmaine’s art, shaped by aphantasia - a condition where she cannot visualize mental images, comes through spontaneous creation, allowing the works to happen organically. In “Wandering” Charmaine brings her travels and musings to life in a sprawling display of sketches, drawings and paintings that invite viewers to explore the worlds she has experienced. From vibrant landscapes to intimate portraits, these works document the artist’s journey, a visual diary of places and personal reflections.
